Welcome to the
repair & fuel squad of UN batalion 88C. First a short
background story for this site. Sweden contributed with a
contingent consisting of one Infantry battalion, MP squad
(12), Civilian Police "CivPol" (18) and some
staff personel (10) at the UNFICYP head quarter in
Nicosia.
The battalion, in fact a light infantry
battalion, consisted of a staff, a staff & supply
company and two infantry (riffle) companies. The two
riffle companies were posted in or very near the buffer
zone. We were part of the staff & supply company
which, together with the battalion staff, were posted on
a small hill on the outskirts of Larnaca close to the
Airport. Our camp, Camp Victoria, got its name when the
Swedish contingent moved from Famagusta in autumn 1977.
Some of the Swedish camps were named after the children
of the Royal Family, HRH Crown Princess Victoria, HRH
Prince Carl-Philip and HRH Princess Madeleine and we also
had Camp Goldfish and Camp Polar.
The repair & fuel squad consisted of
14 men and an British warrent officer a.k.a Mr Landrover.
The squad's main tasks were to maintain and repair all
technical equipment like, vehicles, communication
equipment, fire arms and optical equipment, and even
supply fuel and spare parts. The Swedish government
decided to withdraw Swedish troups from Cyprus in spring
1987, so we were last but one Swedish UN battalion to
serve on Cyprus. The remaining small units were gradually
withdrawn from 1987 to the autumn of 1993. 1993 was the
end of nearly 30 years of Swedish presense in the Peace
Keeping Forces on Cyprus, the island of Afrodite.
We at the workshop felt at home and got
along very well, that's why we are in the habit of coming
together a weekend in June every year.
Finally it's perhaps in place to add that this site is a
wee bit egoistic, since we do not mention anything about
the real reason why we were there. One thing, though, is
for sure though, and that is the fact each and everyone
who has been in the Service of Peace on Cyprus wants to
see a solution to the conflict and Cyprus free of foreign
troups. Start with the "workshop" link. Sorry,
but most of this site are in Swedish.
We appreciate if you sign our guestbook
before you leave this webb site.
We hope you enjoyed it!
